Carthage General's Bodyguard.

Carthage are one of the playable factions in Rome: Total War. They can be played after successfully completing a campaign as a Roman faction or if unlocked by modding / cheats.

Game Play

Starting Position

At the start of the Imperial Campaign Carthage own the following settlements:

  • Carthage
  • Lilybaeum
  • Thapsus
  • Caralis
  • Palma
  • Corduba

Corduba in Spain is normally soon under threat from the Spanish faction, Caralis tends to receive the attentions of the Julii, Lilybaeum is on Sicily which also has a Scipii outpost. Palma is a useful little island to own as mercenary Balearic Slingers can be recruited there, luckily it is seldom threatened by the AI controlled factions.

Win Conditions

For the long campaign victory conditions are "become the supreme ruler of Rome and control at least 50 provinces".

For the short campaign victory conditions are "hold 15 provinces and destroy or outlast The House of Scipii and Spain."

Units

Carthage are described as having "a flexible selection of troop types plus powerful elephants." They are able to recruit some of the same types of units as Spain and Numidia, meaning they have some of the best cavalry in the game. However, they suffer from very poor early game infantry, meaning they must rely on cavalry to win early battles.

Unique Units

Unique units include:

  • Poeni Infantry, a phalanx, although not quite as good as its Greek equivalents, it can best anything in Carthage's region.
  • Sacred Band Infantry, another phalanx, recruited from awesome temples of Baal, they are truly elite troops that can stand and win against many other elites. They are named the sacred band due to Greek writers seeing them fight during a war between Carthage and Syracuse and the units that became the sacred band reminding the writers of the sacred band of Thebes.
  • Sacred Band Cavalry, elite heavy cavalrymen, pre-marian reforms, they are the best cavalry available to any faction on the western part of the map. They do not have as great a charge as some calvary, but their armor and attack make up for it in close combat.
  • Libyan spearmen, a non-phalanx unit of spearmen that is useful for guarding the flanks of a phalanx or as a flanker itself.
  • Elephants, from small to armored, are an excellent for inspiring fear and as a frontal assault. However, keep them well away form javelins, archers, pikes, and siege weapons, as they bring death to them easily.
