Overview

Rebels Faction Symbol.

An unplayable (which can be changed - look at the descr_strat page for more information) faction found in all of the Total War games, rebels are unique faction. They represent all minor states and nations that are not in game. When city has small public order , usually below 70% , rebellion will occur. When city rebels there are two options:

  • It will become a Rebel city and will have average army consisted of units that usually can be recruited there
  • Instead of revolting to the Rebels it will return to its previous (for example: if the Romans conquer Carthage and the faction Carthage dies and later on in the game the Egyptians take Carthage but it rebels, it will become Roman) or historical owner, ex. Cyrene often revolts and becomes Greek or Macedon

There are also various brigands that represent thieves, robbers and such... They will appear inside territories and regions under control of other factions including yours. They must be repelled fast because they do things that will hurt your economy:

  • devastation- simulating the destruction of roads , villages and everything around them hurting your economy
  • blocked roads- when brigands stand near your roads they will block part of the trade income for that settlement
  • capture watchtowers- if rebels come upon your watchtower they will capture it reducing your view over enemy territory

There are also sea brigands known as pirates. When they occur they prey upon passing ships and sometimes are brave enough to blockade a port, but when your fleet is docked it is safe in most cases.

The most powerful rebels are the Amazons in Hyperboria. They are peaceful at first, and will not attack or wander out of their own region, but if they just came out of a revolt, they will pursue the previous owners to the edge and back. Their only units originally are Amazon Chariots (which are bad enough), but after a revolt they will also have a rebel general calvary and a few peasents - all full gold-shields and weapons - but can easily be put down if you have a lot of archers and spearmen (and I mean pikes, not some cheap Triarii or something like that. Also use heavy calvary such as Cataphracts, as they are hard to kill and will be able to clear the chariots for you.

There is also a rumor that they can recruit the fabled Yubtseb elephants, which are the elephants spawned when the oliphaunt cheat is used, but it might just be a rumor.

Rebel Types

  • Brigands and Pirates will attack and mainly rob factions. For this they have many ways such as blocking trade and ambusing armies that pass. Pirates will also cut off sea-trade routes and blockade ports. If left, Brigands and Pirates will grow in strength so they must be destroyed quickly.
  • Deserters and Freed slaves are any troops or slaves that had once belonged to a faction. They usually hide in the countryside and tend not to rob factions. Freed slaves usually are made up of Peasent units as well as Town-watchmen units. Yet Deserters are much more skilled and tend to have better units. Sometimes, the Deserter armies maybe led by a General. Desert, they may even attempt to capture a city.
  • Independent Kingdoms and Rebel Cities are Rebel-faction cities that have been either over-run or conquered. Non-faction cities which have existed independently since the beginning of the game and have never been conquered. They usually have some very basic military units like Militia Hoplites or Town Watch, although if left unconquered, they may grow and develop a stronger/large amount of units.
  • Amazon Rebels can only be found in the province of Hyperboria which, in the game, is located far to the north (in what is now Russia) and is difficult to reach due to the terrain. hey have their own very powerful unique units, including Amazon chariots and gigantic war elephants which is a game secret called "Yubtseb" ("bestbuy" backwards).
  • The Gladiator Uprising may appear in settlements that have an Arena or better. They are usually just Gladiator units but do also differ. In reality, they are similar to Spartacus.
  • Judean Zealots are units that are created whenever, only, Jerusalem revolts against the faction that rules the city. They are good infantry with good morale. They can be very difficult if you are using weaker type units.
  • Helot Uprising are a group of Rebel Slaves that overthrow Sparta and tend to have high morale.

Bear in mind that you can also bribe Rebels and by doing so you have a higher chance of buying them out/them into your army.

Definition of Rebels

A Rebel is someone who takes place in a Rebellion. A Rebellion is a refusal of obedience. It may therefore be seen as encompassing a range of behaviours from civil disobedience and mass nonviolent resistance, to violent and organized attempts to destroy an established authority such as the government.

History

Many slaves were kept, bought and sold in Roman times. They would be used for labour work or for Gladiator fighting. Though most slaves grew tired of the ways of life and started their own small armies, which rebelled against the ruling government. Spartacus is the most famously known rebel slave. Spartacus summoned an army of 140,000 slaves. Unfortunately, the Romans (Publicola) defeated him along with the Gauls and Germanics.

Most Rebels also hid away from cities and lived in the countryside. They would steal and highjack traders.

Barbarian Invasion

In the first expansion pack for Rome: Total War, Barbarian Invasion, the rebels start with the following settlements:

  • Campus Frisii (Tribus Frisii)
  • Colonia Agrippina (Germania inferior)
  • Campus Chattii (Tribus Chattii)

  • Campus Quaddi (Tribus Quadi)
