Gaul (RTW Faction)
Gaul Faction Symbol-Vanilla.png
Name: Gaul
From Game: Rome: Total War
Culture: Barbarian
Playable:

Gaul is one of the playable factions in Rome: Total War. It can be played after successfully completing a campaign as a Roman faction or by simple modifications to the game files (more information on which can be found here).

Gameplay

Gaul is a 'barbarian' civilization, and thus are unable to build stone walls and access many of the types of buildings and units that the Roman and Greek cultures are able to. However this does mean that they get their Elite troops much quicker than "civilised" factions.

Starting Position

Gauls Starting Position (Click to enlarge)

Gaul starts in what is now France, as well as Northern Italy. They are bordered by the Julii to the south, Spain to the West and the Britons to the North,

At the beginning of the campaign, they hold the following settlements:

  • Alesia (Gallic Capital) Region - Central Gaul
  • Condate Redonum (Gallic Town) Region - Armorica
  • Patavium (Gallic Large Town) Region - Venetia
  • Lemonum (Gallic Town) Region - Aquitania
  • Medolanium (Gallic Large Town) Region - Cisalpine Gaul
  • Narbo Martius (Gallic Town) Region - Narbonensis
  • Numantia (Gallic Large Town) Region - Celtiberia

Victory Conditions

  • Long Campaign: Hold 50 regions including Rome
  • Short Campaign: Hold 15 regions and outlast or destroy the Julii and the Senate

Units

Gaul is a well rounded faction that gets it's powerful troops early in the game, usually well before other factions. This is their greatest strength. Their basic spear armed Warband are quite strong for how early they come in. They have several strong units of Sword Infantry, decent cavalry and a very strong archer unit that is uniquely armed with a spear. The Gauls also have Druids, who help their morale. However they have no siege weapons besides the basics, and in the late game their troops will have trouble against elite armies of more civilized powers.

Unique Units

  • Forester Warband: Become available after the player builds a higher-tier Archery Range.
