Pontus, like the Selucid Empire, is a very versatile faction, with a heavy cavalry focus but competent pikemen as well. They are a well rounded faction with few weaknesses; although their infantry is not the best but it is still very useful later on.  They get access to some very strong cavalry choices that are armed with Javelins and competent in melee, along with a unit similar to Cataphracts. They have a very good selection of Chariots, both Chariot Archers and Scythed Chariots that are around as good as those of Egypt. Their early infantry is the typical Eastern trash infantry, but they get some quite good Pike units later in the game that are similar to the Selucids. Their missile troops and siege weapons are average. Overall Pontus has quite a good roster, with useful troops at all points in the game.

'''Cappadocian Cavalry:''' Cappadocian lancers are excellent horsemen, best suited to charging into and breaking through enemy formations.
One possible strategy as Pontus would be to take the rebel and Greek/Seleucid provinces to the west as well as Tarsus to the south.  Then you can move against Armenia and Egypt.

Pontus was founded by Mithradates I Ktistes, son of Prince Mithradates of Cius, who was murdered by Antigonus Monothanus.Antigonus planned to murder Mithradates the younger as well, but Mithradates was tipped off by Demetrius Poliorcetes, and fled to the powerful fortress of Cimiata, from which he extended his power, and was joined by various troops from across the region.Eventually he proclaimed himself king.He made alliances with various towns to protect them from the Diadochi, and allied himself with the Gauls of Galatia. His Kingdon remained independent until the the reign of Mithrdates VI.Though Mithradates was a strong king,he had the misfortune of being forced to face the Romans. He fought against them with some success for a time, but even Mithradates was no match for Pompey the Great and he was defeated.

Game Play

Starting Position

Pontus Starting Position (Click to enlarge)

Pontus starts in north and east Asia Minor, north of the Seleucid Empire, and west of Armenia.

Their cities are:

  • Sinope - Pontic Capital; Region - Pontus
  • Mazaka - Pontic Large Town; Region - Cappadocia

Victory Conditions

  • Long Campaign: Hold 50 provinces including Rome.
  • Short campaign: Hold 15 provinces and outlast or destroy Armenia and Thrace.

Units

Pontic General's Bodyguard.

Unique Units

Bronze Shield Pikemen: Bronze shields are the elite of the army of Pontus, among the heirs of the world-conquering phalanxes of Alexander!

Cappadocian Cavalry: Cappadocian lancers are excellent horsemen, best suited to charging into and breaking through enemy formations.

Pontic Heavy Cavalry: Pontic heavy cavalry are javelin-armed horsemen who can also fight hand-to-hand - a potent combination in one force!
