The Censor position has changed substantially over time. They were previously elected, were equal to the Consul in administering punishments to referred citizens, and for a time were minor deputies while the moderation of the Curia was shifted to the [[Praefect]] office. The current 'wide' role and direct appointment were established when both Praefects and the Referrals were abolished and replaced with Ostrakon, respectively.

The Censors are two assistants of the Consul who help oversee day-to-day operations in the Curia. Their responsibilities depend on the role of their Consul; they may be anything from advisors to the de-facto managers when the Consul is away. How they act is one part deputy, one part backup. They follow the instructions of their 'boss' as they're given, but if the Consul is unable or unwilling to perform Constitutional tasks then it is their duty to step in and ensure the task is done. They also assist in moderating the Curia.
