Overview
The Austrian Empire lies in central Europe and poses the main European bastion against the Ottoman Turks. For centuries, the two nations have been fighting against each other and the Austrian military has become strong and organized as a result. The east and south of Europe offer many possibilities for expanding. Furthermore, Austria wants to keep and defend its supremacy over the Holy Roman Empire and the German lands. While Austria does not have any colonies, its lands are prosperous and fertile. The Empire doesn't need a powerful navy and its strong land army should serve as a hefty deterrent for any foreign power. However, the weakened Ottomans are still a major enemy and Russia is also eager to expand further into Europe. On top of that, the small Prussian kingdom is rising in the north and will use every opportunity to expand its territory.
In conclusion, Austria is surrounded by many possible adversaries. Therefore, the Empire has to utilize diplomacy in order to prevent a war on multiple fronts. However, while dealing with foreign affairs, Austria has to keep an eye on the events within its borders as well. The Hungarians are not very happy under Austrian rule and would love to found their own kingdom. They might well start a rebellion if there aren't enough Austrian troops to keep them in check. As a result, a smart Austrian ruler will have to find the right balance between enlarging his territory, forming essential alliances and avoiding internal strife.
Starting Position
Austria begins the game with a total of 6 regions. The whole Austrian Empire is located in the European theater as the country doesn't have any colonies. While Austria's province Croatia does border the Mediterranean Sea, the rest of the country has no access to the sea. Therefore, Austria is a very land based nation which is reflected by its strong army yet weak navy. Austria's capital is Vienna which is also its most developed city. However, Hungary is the most popolous region, followed by Bohemia & Moravia.
The Austrian Empire borders Bavaria in the west, Saxony, Prussia and Poland & Lithuania in the north and the Ottoman Empire in the southeast. The country does not start at war with anyone and is allied to Bavaria.

Units
Austria fields a typical European army, similar to that of the surrounding states. The country's army consists of units such as line infantry, light infantry, hussars, ulans, militia and several standard artillery units. Later on, Austria gets access to other units such as guards and household cavalry. If a lower-class revolution succeeds in turning the absolute monarchy into a republic, Austria will be able to train weak conscript units as well. The Austrian army might be large but its training and morale is inferior to that of the other nations. The empire's strength is based on quantity rather than quality. One example of that would be Austria's line infantry which has more men per unit but worse than average morale, defense, charge and accuracy.
Austria isn't known for the strength of its navy. Therefore, Austria's ships are nothing special and the country has access to the standard lineup which most other factions share. The Austrian fleet includes trade ships, weaker ones such as brigs and sloops but also strong first and second rate frigates.
Special Units
Austria has a few unique units and some it only shares with one other major faction - Uhlans and Jaegers are shared with Prussia. Austria's unique units include Hungarian hussars, grenzers, and the formidable Windbueshe Jaegers, armed with airguns - which make them shoot faster and nearly silent! It should also be noted that Austrian Line Infantry units are 25% larger than those of other factions, but their stats are not as high as others.
A glitch currently exists in the tech tree which works very much in Austria's favor. It only needs to research Light Infantry Doctrine to gain access to Jaegers (who use rifles - this upgrade usually unlocks "Light Infantry," Chasseurs Britanniques, etc.), and have to research Machined Rifling (the standard technology to allow Jaegers, Green Jackets, Tirailleurs, etc.) to produce Grenzers, who use (double-barreled) muskets.
