Greeks have many powerful hoplites. They are threatened by the Macedonians soon after the start of the game.

The armies of Greece are somewhat old-fashioned, and are built around a core of heavy phalanxes. At the beginning of the game, they are threatened by the Macedonians, and most of their cities can only produce weak militia hoplites.

However, the Greeks have a great potential of becoming rich!

With money, they can bribe Macedonian armies, most of which join the Greeks in their entirety. The same thing applies to fighting against Thrace and the Seleucid Empire.

Also, their position in the middle of the map leaves them somewhat exposed to naval invasions by Egypt, Carthage, and later the Romans.

A powerful fleet and hihg-level arracks are needed. Once the Greeks begin producing armored hoplites, however, it becomes a lot easier from there.

One possible strategy with Greece is to abandon Syracuse at the beginning of game and concentrate on Macedon. When Macedon are driven from Greece it is possible to build your military and challenge the Brutii and Rome.

However, it can build strong troops faster than other provinces and starts with stone walls, which can easily hold off enemies at bay. This is a more unconventional strategy, but it allows teh conquering of Italy faster.

Greece was firstly only consisted of few Greek city-states. They became powerful because Alexander the Great ( born 346BC) led them to conquer much of the then known world. Greek architecture and art were famous. There are few places in world that haven't felt them and their influence. After the death of Alexander the Great his kingdom became separated states including: Greek cities, Thrace , Macedon , Seleucid Empire , Egypt , Pontus and Armenia. All of these countries were ruled by his successors, but none of them were powerful enough to keep his empire together.

Game Play

Starting Position

The Greek Cities start in mainland greece. (Click to enlarge)

The Greek Cities start with a few cities in mainland Greece, along with several colonies scattered around the Mediterranean and Aegean. They are bordered by the Scipii and Carthage on Sicily , Macedon in Greece and Seleucid Empire in Asia Minor. They are supposedly controlled by Sparta. This is because all the faction rulers have the title "of Sparta". (Example: Kleomenes of Sparta) The democracy is diminished for the Greek Cities are ruled by a king as their faction leader.

Greek Cities are as following:

  • Sparta: Greek Cities Capital; Region - Laconia
  • Rhodes: Greek Cities Large Town; Region - Rhodos
  • Pergamum: Greek Cities Large Town; Region - Phrygia
  • Thermon: Greek Cities Large Town; Region - Aetolia
  • Syracuse: Greek Cities City; Region Sicilia Graecus

Victory Conditions

  • Long Campaign: Control 50 provinces including Latium (Rome)
  • Short Campaign: Hold 15 provinces and outlive or destroy both Macedon and Thrace

Units

Greek General's Bodyguard.

The Greeks are an infantry focused faction. Their strengths are very strong phalanx units that can crush infantry and cavalry alike and are also available early in the game. The most notable and strong Phalanx units are the very tough Armoured Hoplites and the Legendary Spartans. Their archers are average, though strong mercenaries are available locally. They also have strong siege weapons. Their cavalry is their weakness; it is the worst in the game and the only good choice is the Generals Armoured Bodyguard.

  • Siege

Unique Units

Spartan Hoplites: Spartan hoplites are trained from infancy to be nothing but soldiers. They are 'perfect soldiers' and nothing else. They can be trained only in the cities of Sparta and Syracuse. High recruitment cost and upkeep cost but make up for it somewhat with 2 hitpoints and good attack capabilities.

Armoured Hoplites: Armoured hoplites are an elite among Greek soldiery, carefully selected and given the best training to make them superior spearmen. They are the third strongest spear unit in the game, after the Carthaginian Sacred Band and the Spartans.
