New Spain is an unplayable minor nation in Empire: Total War and is a colony/protectorate of Spain.

Overview

New Spain (Spanish: Virreinato de Nueva Espana) was a viceroyalty, or administrative unit of the Spanish colonial empire, comprising primarily territories in what was known then as 'America Septentrional' North America. The creation of a viceroyalty in the Americas was a result of the Spanish conquest of the Aztec Empire (1519 to 1521). The lands and societies brought under Spanish control were of unprecedented complexity and wealth, which presented both an incredible opportunity and a threat to the Crown of Castile.

The new Bourbon kings did not split the Viceroyalty of New Spain into smaller administrative units as they did with the Viceroyalty of Peru. The first innovation, in 1776, was by José de Gálvez, the new Minister of the Indies (1775–1787), establishing the Commandancy General of the Provincias Internas known as the Provincias Internas (Commandancy General of the Internal Provinces of the North, (Spanish: Comandancia y Capitanía General de las Provincias Internas). He appointed Teodoro de Croix (nephew of the former viceroy) as the first Commander General of the Provinicas Internas, independent of the Viceroy of New Spain, to provide more autonomy for the frontier provinces. They included Nueva Vizcaya, Nuevo Santander, Sonora y Sinaloa, Las Californias, Coahuila y Tejas (Coahuila and Texas), and Nuevo México.

Starting Position

Grand Campaign

New Spain begins as the largest minor faction, with 6 provinces under its control. This makes it larger than even some of the major factions, such as Poland-Lithuania and the United Provinces, and on par with Great Britain and Austria. Despite this, it begins considerably poorer than all of the above since all of these territories are relatively underdeveloped. Its capital region begins the game with barely 1300 region wealth and no province under its ownership exceeds 2000. Even so, New Spain has the potential to become an economic powerhouse relatively early, with an abundance of gold and gems in South America, as well as easy access to large amounts of lucrative trade resources such as spices, sugar, coffee and tobacco.

Like most minor factions, New Spain begins the game with only access to an Army Encampment and thus cannot recruit any effective troops until they have had the chance to upgrade to at least the Barracks level. However, with only raids from Pirates and the technologically inferior armies of the weak Pueblo Nations to contend with in the early game, there are very few immediate threats for a New Spain player to worry about.

While beginning the game as a protectorate of Spain, rarely will their former overlord send forces to deal with their rebellious subject should they take up arms against the metropole and seek to secure their freedom.

Like most other colonial factions, New Spain can recruit the generic European unit roster alongside a few units that are otherwise unique to their mother country (in this case, the formidable Spanish Galleon).
