Saxony is a protectorate of Poland-Lithuania, holding its home region between Austria and Prussia.

Overview

Saxony has a long history as a duchy, an electorate of the Holy Roman Empire (the Electorate of Saxony), and eventually as a kingdom (the Kingdom of Saxony). In 18th century it became known for its cultural achievements, although it was politically inferior to Prussia and Austria, which pressed Saxony from either side. In 1756, Saxony joined the coalition of Austria, France and Russia against Prussia. Frederick II of Prussia chose to attack preemptively and invaded Saxony in August 1756, precipitating the Seven Years War. The Prussians quickly defeated Saxony and incorporated the Saxon army into the Prussian army. At the end of the Seven Years War, Saxony once again became an independent state.

As a result of the decisive Austro-Prussian and Franco-Prussian wars, Saxony and many other German states eventually merged with Prussia to form the German Empire. Saxony remained part of Germany despite territorial redefinings after both World War I and II. What was once Saxony is currently part of modern Germany.

Starting Position

Saxony begins with one region, Saxony, whose capital is Dresden, a large city with 5 building slots. It is located directly to the south of Brandenburg, owned by Prussia, and also borders with Bavaria to the south-west and Austria to the south-east. Saxony is situated within the European theatre, and is landlocked so has no ports or a navy. Dresden is reasonably wealthy so Saxony is able to field quite a large army for its size early on, but is often quickly defeated by Prussia.

At the beginning of the campaign Saxony is one of Poland-Lithuania's two protectorates, along with Courland. When Prussia and Poland go to war, as they often do, Saxony will usually join on the side of Poland. Sometimes, Prussia will decide to go to war with Saxony first, rather than Poland, they will usually be supported by Poland. If Prussia chooses not to go to war, Saxony will often accept a trade agreement proposal. Austria is another early threat to Saxony, as they are likely to go to war with Poland, and Saxony will declare war too.

Despite being able to field and support a decent army at the beginning of the campaign, Saxony is usually defeated quickly by either Prussia or Austria, but may return if the region successfully rebels against its conquerors.

Strategy

Saxony is a rich province, and fields a relatively weak army in the beginning. In fact, they can be destroyed with relative ease by Prussia's initial army, should it choose to.

Should Saxony survive the initial stages, it tends to (like most other minor nations) build up a massive army in its home city and remain there until it is conquered. Saxony rarely invades anyone, and anyone who declares war on it should expect trouble from Poland-Lithuania, its protector.
