Novgorod is mostly identical to Russia in the original game. It starts with some provinces around Novgorod and an excellent general for leader, Alexander Nevski.

It is in a tough starting position, with the Teutonic Order to the west, the Danes to the north and the Mongols down south, the only side that you have protection on is the Eastern border, which is the map limit. The best way to start the campaign would be to use the large garrisons in Novgorod and Smolensk to take the smaller cities around your starting territory.
